Keith will lead this trip, along with Ken Hay from Southern Sky’s Overlanding Trips. Ken will get us away from all the usual commercial tourism spots ‘off the beaten track’ and Keith will make sure we stop for the best photographic opportunities. Ken has been involved in four wheel driving for the past 20 years and taking organised four wheel drive/overlanding tours for the past five. His focus is on bespoke trips that are specifically designed for niche groups.
The trip is limited to 20 people, so that there are no more than 8-10 4WD vehicles on the tracks.
Day One: Friday 3 December – We meet at the Omarama meeting point at 8am, where we will have a driver briefing and introduction for those who weren’t able to join us the night before. Driver trip books and radios will be provided to ensure constant two way communication with all vehicles. From Omarama, we’ll head south to Bendigo Station and traverse the Rising Sun track taking us into St Bathans. From there we’ll make our way to Ranfurly where we will base ourselves for the remainder of the trip.
Day Two: Saturday 4 – Mt Buster and Falls Dam range. We’ll have an early start to take in the rising sun and the mountain top views of the beautiful Kyburn and Buster ranges. We’ll then make our way out to the Falls Range. Along the way, we’ll traverse gorges, gullies and tussock plateaus. Then we’ll head back to Ranfurly for a well-deserved refreshment and dinner.
Day Three: Sunday 5 – An easier day for those who want a break, stopping off at destinations as the group decides.
Day Four: – Monday 6 – Rock and Pillar Range. This day will take us along the Rock and Pillar Range, the down the Old Dunstan Road back to Ranfurly.
Day Five: Tuesday 7 – Serpentine and Poolburn. We travel to, and visit, the historic Serpentine Church and surrounding area before we continue on to the Poolburn Reservoir for more unique scenery. We then finish back in Ranfurly.
Return home on Wednesday
Cost per person is $495.00 (this covers hire of radios etc.) plus accommodation (Ranfurly Camp Ground – book your own level of comfort), meals and drinks.
