NPSNZ Field Trip – Kaikoura Trip – 6 to 8th March 2020
Trip Leader: Barry
Trip Report: Heather & Al
An enthusiastic group of 13 explored the Kaikoura coastal region. Fine weather enabled us all to enjoy the uplifted landscapes. It’s still mind blowing to take in the immense changes to photograph each time you visit and the road works and improvements.
At our own leisure we arrived at the Canterbury Underwater Dive facilities, some visiting Nape Nape on the way and the town foreshore for birds, the seals, walkways and the sunset at South Bay.
Saturday the wind was dropping for each boat trip, although lumpy seas made it difficult for hand held photos. Our skipper, Mark from Fish Kaikoura, endeavoured to find wildlife and threw out fish heads etc to attract Albatrosses, Giant Petrel and Cape Pigeons, with success, while an unmentioned member feed the fishes!!!! Little blue penguins and a playful seal were also spotted. Many headed north in the afternoon to find THE WALL!! Even though members provided evidence with photos, was it THE WALL that so many found hard to locate even though Barry provided maps. After a delicious shared dinner many visited South Bay for another special sunset.
Sunrise was more spectacular on Sunday morning for a few early risers at the Chimney and at the foreshore. An efficient pack up and out early allowed everyone to travel home how they wished.
Thanks Barry for another nature adventure for members who enjoy the friendship and shared interests on such a weekend.
