Trip Leader: Katherine McCusker
Trip Report: Jocy Wood

A group of 13 members spent an enjoyable weekend in Kaikōura, making the most of the coastal scenery, wildlife, and relaxed company. The trip offered a welcome chance to explore the area, and enjoy photographing the seaside landscapes. Although the forecast had suggested unsettled conditions, the weather was kinder than expected.

Saturday morning began with members heading north and south in search of a an impressive sunrise. Mid-morning provided dramatic cloud formations, which created interesting light and  texture for photography along the coastline. Members spread out, some focusing on landscape shots while others looked for wildlife. Throughout the day, members explored different parts of the coast and were rewarded with memorable sightings of seals, dolphins, and even a whale. Between excursions, the group came together for café coffees, pre-dinner drinks, and conversation. Saturday evening was spent sharing dinner at the Irish pub, Donegal House, where everyone enjoyed the chance to relax, compare the day’s experiences, and reflect on the photographs and wildlife encounters.

On Sunday morning, the group gathered at Goose Bay, where members spent time weeding the area and quietly remembering. Overall, the Kaikōura trip was a successful and rewarding outing, combining photography, wildlife, shared meals, good company, and time outdoors.
