Trip Leader: Linley Earnshaw

On Saturday 6th November, a keen group of six members led by Linley Earnshaw plus Naomi, her Japanese guest, enjoyed a very pleasant field trip to Castle Hill exploring the rock formations and sights. With little wind and just a mild breeze kept the conditions most enjoyable and a later thin cloud ensuring the heat was not too excessive. The sky was huge and the shade was very welcome as we explored the extensive site, largely avoiding the many tourists.

Visiting the historic cave at the rear of the main site was a definite highlight for some and we could envisage ancient Māori travelers resting in the huge north west facing overhang. We were interested to learn of the rock formation while under the sea and to find familiar formations had taken on new profiles in the different light and time of the day.

To counter the heat, Lesley’s 88th birthday was celebrated in style with enormous Springfield ice creams, with her appropriately challenging the largest one we had ever seen. Thanks, Linley, for a most worthwhile and enjoyable day that was experienced by all.
