Easter Friday provided us with stunning, fine weather and everyone took their time on the journey to Westport, enjoying the coast and stopping at fungi spots along the way. Most of us made our way to Tauranga Bay, eager to catch the sunset, fully aware that the weather might turn due to an impending weather warning.
Saturday morning started with sunrise photography near the lighthouse, river and estuary. Then most of the group ventured up to Denniston Plateau to explore the historic mining ruins, while enjoying some spectacular views of the coast. By late morning, the weather began to change, and it was time to seek refuge in a coffee shop. Despite the forecast, everyone branched out in the afternoon, in different directions to explore the area soaking in its rich history and rugged coastline.
Sunday morning brought heavy rain leading many of us to leave our cameras behind and find indoor activities, but the more adventurous photographers ventured out to find the elusive blue fungi Entoloma hochstetteri at the start of the Old Ghost Road track and do a recce for potential photography spots. The day wrapped up with a delightful potluck dinner, offering a wide range of delicious dishes and great conversation.
By Monday, the weather had vastly improved, and the group scattered in different directions. A smaller crew set out on an unofficial photography excursion to Karamea, ready to make the most of the sunshine, Karamea Arches and start of some of the walking tracks.
