On 2 May, a group of thirteen enthusiastic members gathered early at the Castle Hill rocks carpark, managing to avoid the crowds of families, tourists, and climbers that often flock to this popular destination later in the morning. The weather was stunning day, a dusting of snow visible on the surrounding hills, and high clouds providing ideal conditions for photography.
After arrival, participants dispersed in various directions, each searching for unique and interesting rock formations to capture. Four of us made our way up the steep hill towards Castle Hill village, keen to photograph the rocks in that area. The constantly shifting light throughout the morning created many opportunities for photos.
A few group members were lucky enough to spot falcons nesting in the rocks. Although it was a challenge to photograph these birds, seeing them in their natural habitat was a highlight for those who caught a glimpse.
After enjoying a picnic lunch together, everyone once again set off in different directions, some venturing back into the rocks. Peter, Kath, and I headed to Lake Pearson, where we discovered that the Department of Conservation had removed the willow trees, we previously enjoyed photographing for their reflections. However, we were pleased to find that new toilets had been installed next to the Castle Hill Community Centre in the village, which were much cleaner than those at the rocks carpark.
Thank you to John and Chris for organising a great day.
